What Cumberland Presbyterians Believe
Like other Christian, Cumberland Presbyterians believe in:
The Bible - The only infallible rule of faith and practice.
The Godhead - The trinity: Jesus, the Holy Spirit and God the Father
The Church - The head is Christ and all believers in Christ are a part.
Salvation - Every person must make a personal commitment of his life to Christ in order to be saved.
Preservation of Believers - Each regenerated person will always strive to live a life which is pleasing to Christ.
Sanctification - Every child of God will use every means possible to grow in grace.
The Sabbath - Changed to the first day(Sunday) of the week after the resurrection of Christ.
The Sacraments - Water Baptism (Symbolic Sprinkling and emersion) and The Lord's Supper.
Things to Come - Spirits of righteous go to heaven, spirits of wicked cast into hell.
CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH GOVERNMENT
The official statement of doctrine and government of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church is called The Confession of Faith.
The word "Presbyterian" actually refers to a form of church government more than a theology. We are Presbyterian in government rather than Congregational or Episcopal. Our units of government are: Session, Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly.
The governing body of local Cumberland Presbyterian church is called the Session. The Session administers policy. It is made up of elders, elected and voted on by the congregation. The Pastor serves as Moderator of this body. A corporate vote of the people is taken only when critical issues arise.
There are three governmental structures above the local church. They are Presbytery (Regional or Area); Synod (state-wide); and General Assembly (National). The guidelines and operation of each of these bodies is spelled out in The Confession of Faith.
Invitation to Christian Discipleship
Response: Accept Jesus Christ As Your Personal Savior
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9-10 King James Version (KJV)
